About the Venue

The Smugglers Cott sits in the heart of Looe, in southeast Cornwall, and operates as a family-owned restaurant.

Smugglers Cott is a combination of historic buildings, now joined together. The main original building, dating from 1420, is Grade II listed. The Merchant's House, where the main restaurant floor is found, was built around 1590 using oak timbers salvaged from wrecked Spanish Armada ships.

The Smugglers is so named because of the old hidden stone staircase and the discovery of a Smuggling Tunnel which led towards the quayside and beneath the old market. The tunnel's exact route is uncertain, but it is thought to have passed beneath the old market square towards the quayside, where it is rumoured to have once connected to Osborne House, a former inn in Lower Chapel Street, with another possible branch leading towards The Fisherman's Arms, although this remains unconfirmed.

During renovations in 1932, part of the cellar was discovered to have been partitioned off with a false wall. When the wall was removed, the old tunnel was discovered, leading from a small hidden room and passageway beneath the old market, before branching off towards the quay.

In 1990, master carpenter Ivor Toms was undertaking refurbishment work at the restaurant and confirmed the story. Ivor had lived in part of the Smugglers building from the late 1920s to the mid-1930s, when he was a small boy, and remembered well the workmen breaking through the false wall.
