About the Venue

The The Punch Bowl Inn can be found in the heart of a rural village of Lanreath, serving the community for over 700 years, a free house since 1620. It boasts a wealth of historical hauntings, from phantom carriage’s to playful children, watching from the windows and heard playing outside. Rumours of a secret tunnel system under the buildings, beyond the cellar, a secret warren beneath the ancient village. A Civil War era Royal visitation, in the 17thC. A ghastly death, which many believe was murder. And finally, there is a famous CURSE!

The old pub was in a very sad state, up until very recently, with many local people fearing the pub was gone forever. But, restored to its former glory, the place still echoes with the past. Quite a few frightful stories, local legends and now, modern day occurrences! The new owner, and staff have experienced a variety of strange occurrences. With no previous investigations, and over 700+ years of history, the Punch Bowl is as enticing as it gets.

The Black Cock Curse

The story goes the Reverend of Lanreath was entertaining the Curate of the parish one evening, when the bottle of wine ran dry. The reverend, rather tipsily, went to descend to the cellar to grab another bottle, when he stumbled down the stone steps and broke his neck. It was rumoured at the time that the Curate was having an affair with the Reverend's wife, and there may have been foul play the night of the fateful 'fall'. Did he trip or was he pushed?

The very next morning, following the death, an angry Black Cockerel appeared in the village, terrorising locals from the top of the lane down towards the old pub and church.

The cockerel ran amuck, scratching and clawing at all that had the misfortune to cross his path. Launching itself at one villager, a near miss, the cockerel then smashed through the front window of the Punch Bowl Inn, flew across the room and straight into the small clay oven. A maid promptly sealed the oven shut. The landlord hastily sealed the oven. So devilish and dangerous, the villagers vowed never to uncover the old oven and to NEVER open it. It's still in there to this day. The Black Cockerel was said to be a manifestation of the Reverend's angry spirit.
